🏆 SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2023 DUTCH HEBBAN THRILLER PRIZE

More than twenty years after her father’s murder, Oxford scientist Norah Longfield receives a broken video call from a frightened stranger. The message is brief: find the research her father left behind—and keep it safe. Within minutes, the carefully ordered life Norah has built begins to unravel.

At the same time, beneath the Antarctic ice, a United Nations research team makes an alarming discovery. The two events appear to be connected.

Norah must flee London and confront a past she was forced to leave behind. Far from safety and unsure whom to trust, she sets out to recover the missing research—a search that will take her across continents and put everyone who gets close to her in danger.

Her father’s work has remained hidden for decades. But Norah is not the only one looking for it, and those closing in on her have no intention of letting her reach it first…

ABOUT THIJS VOORTMAN

Thrillers where reality comes dangerously close.

Thijs Voortman writes international thrillers in which science, the natural world, and human nature intersect. His stories begin with a discovery, a secret, or an event that cannot be viewed in isolation, drawing his characters ever further beyond the boundaries of their familiar world.

That world often spans continents: from Oxford and London to Antarctica, from tropical rainforests to the Caribbean. Yet behind these international settings, people are always at the heart of his stories. People who, under mounting pressure, must make difficult choices, cross boundaries, and question what remains when everything they once took for granted begins to fall apart. This tension lies at the heart of his thrillers.

Thijs’ fascination with such dilemmas is rooted in more than just his imagination. He spent many years working as a lawyer in the Netherlands and Curaçao and now works as a legal advisor. Throughout his professional career, he has witnessed how conflicting interests, beliefs, and responsibilities can collide — and how reality is rarely as black and white as it first appears.

Thijs made his debut as a thriller author with Golden Haze (originally published in Dutch as Gouden Nevel), which was shortlisted for the 2023 Dutch Hebban Thriller Prize. He followed this with Tropical Storm (Tropische Storm), another international thriller built around a pressing contemporary issue.

A DISCOVERY IN ANTARCTICA.

A secret hidden for twenty years.
